At terra20, our story begins with building a home. In 2006, founder Steve Kaminski was building a home for his family from the ground up. While watching a hockey game with friend Bill Stewart, Steve mentioned how difficult it had been to source sustainable materials for his project. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a single source for sustainable alternative products?
That casual remark was the start of something big. It fuelled a desire to create an entirely new concept on the Canadian retail market. Steve and Bill were on a mission – to create an easier way to explore healthier, more sustainable options.
“Our goal was to make it easy to buy healthier and more sustainable products,” notes Steve. “We also wanted to create connections between our guest at the store and the vendors that makes the products. We thought this personal connection was important to form a bond of trust between the vendor, the guest and us at terra20.”
Their vision has evolved to a different type of modern retail environment. One that acknowledges our busy lives and has made it simple to explore healthier, more sustainable options. One that embraces and encourages a community that wants to make a difference in the way they consume every day products. One that places emphasis not just on products, but the value of education.
Equally as important, terra20 has established a unique, mutually beneficial relationship with its vendors. We provide a channel for smaller, independent vendors to get their products to market, while continuously expanding and improving our product selection. At terra20 every product is chosen with care to make sure it lives up to our standards.
“We’ve had to turn some vendors away. When it comes to understanding their certifications, we’ve really got to do our due diligence,” states Bill. “The comment we hear a lot is that other retailers don’t go as deep into understanding their product line.”
