Putting Natural Deodorants to the Test

0 comments / Posted by Nick Turenne

Natural deodorant. Everyone has a story to share; from horror stories to triumphant ones, we’ve heard ‘em all. So we’ve talked to staff and friends of terra20 to see what natural deodorant works for them and what they do to put them to the test. The results were surprising; everyone has a different favourite, but the common theme? All participants found a natural deodorant that works for them and has been tried and true for many years.

Everyone’s body chemistry is unique, and a deodorant might work wonders for one person but not work at all for someone else. By polling a variety of different people we hope by reading their stories you can find a deodorant that works for you too!

Nick's Pick: Earthwise

About: Made from corn-derived propylene glycol, this aluminum-free deodorant provides all-day odour protection, even for those who live an active lifestyle!

Length of use: 2 years.

Why I love it: Over the last few years I’ve gradually made the switch to healthier everyday products. Deodorant was one of the last, as I found it to be among the most challenging. I have to confess, I fell victim to the stigma of natural deodorants being messy and ineffective, based on a few bad experiences.

As an active person, I typically turned to traditionally scented, reliable stick deodorants. Well, this deodorant is exactly that, but without parabens and aluminum! It’s also vegan and Canadian-made – two important values I look for in my products.

Putting it to the test: As an active runner, I put this deodorant to the test in extreme Ottawa summer heat about 5 days a week. I’m never weary of meeting up with friends for coffee right after a long run and ruining the vibe with bad odour, as this deodorant keeps me fresh through the sweat.

Michelle's Pick: Schmidt's

About: With humble beginnings in a Portland, Oregon kitchen, owner Jamie set out to change the way people think about natural deodorants. Committed to putting ingredients first, they created a line of deodorants that make you feel as good as you smell.

Length of use: 1 year.

Why you love it: After experimenting with so many natural deodorants, I finally found the one. There are so many things to love about this mineral-enriched stick deodorant, that just happens to include some of my favourite ingredients - absorbent charcoal and odour-neutralizing magnesium. I can’t get enough of the smell and the easy-to-apply consistency. Rarely having to reapply throughout the day, this guy keeps me smelling fresh & clean all day long.

Putting it to the test: Everyday I wear it at work, long dog walks & regular hot yoga. I recently put it to the real test at City of Om, a full-day, outdoor yoga festival in June. Believe it or not, after 5 sweaty classes, I was still pleasant to be around.

Kas' Pick: Penny Lane Organics

About: The product is made with only a handful of natural ingredients and actually works.

Length of use: 3 years.

Why you love it: When you apply the deodorant wet, it goes on extremely easy. I apply it with my fingers by first wiping off some deodorant from the stick, then making it into a cream by adding a little bit of water from the tap and then applying it. This means that one stick can last me over half a year since I can apply more on days I workout after work and less on days that I do not.

Putting it to the test: I enjoy biking, volleyball, tennis, rock climbing and going to the gym on a regular basis.

Kelly's Pick: Routine

About: You won’t find any nasty ingredients like aluminum zirconium, aluminum chlorohydrate, parabens, triclosan, or propylene glycol in their products. They are made using clean, wholesome ingredients in Canada.

Length of use: 2 years.

Why you love it: I've used other natural deodorants for years but found that after a few weeks most products couldn't keep up with my active lifestyle and just stopped working. Even though colleagues were raving about Routine I was hesitant to try a non-stick deodorant because I thought the application would be a pain but I was so wrong! The creamy whipped consistency feels great on my skin and I'm in love with the earthy "Like a Boss" scent with rosemary, bergamot and geranium.

Putting it to the test: I can’t imagine yoga, gardening or walking the dog without it!

Andrew's Pick: saaboon

About: saaboon UTILITY has been formulated with specific ingredients that will interrupt the build-up of odour-producing bacteria. UTILITY will not only keep you smelling fresh but will also moisturize your skin in the process.

Length of use: 4 years.

Why you love it: I love that this deodorant is made locally on Gladstone Street in Centretown, and the ingredients won’t compromise my health. I also like how there is no overpowering scent. There is nothing worse than smelling artificial fragrance all day like I found with traditional drug store brands of deodorant.

Putting it to the test: As a contractor, I’m always moving and sweating so I absolutely need a deodorant that works, because sometimes I’m in a very tight space with a co-worker and the last thing I need is to be the smelly guy at work. Working outside in the summer, with an average of 20,000 steps a day I know Saaboon has my back.
